Currency
The basic monetary unit in Mongolia is TUGRUG, which is equal to 100 mungu. At present, 10,000, 5,000, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 tugrug notes are in circulation. The official organization authorized to exchange foreign currency is the Commercial banks in Ulaanbaatar and other province centers. They have network of branches in Ulaanbaatar and exchange bureaux at hotels.
Medical Services
Medical services are available everywhere. All necessary expenses connecting with medical treatment have to be paid by the patient.
In the countryside, there are no medical facilities and, while medical facilities are available in Ulaanbaatar, standards and methods of treatments may not be the same as in your country. Therefore, if there is a possibility of illness or need for hospitalization while in Mongolia, it should not be taken lightly. If you have a serious medical problem or a medical condition which might be adversely affected by strenuous travel, please contact us so we may provide more precise information. Since serious illness or accidents involving serious injury are best treated at a Western medical facility, and since emergency medical evacuation can be extremely expensive, we highly recommend that travelers to remote destinations such as Mongolia obtain travel insurance which includes emergency evacuation coverage. This insurance covers the cost of emergency transportation if an accident or illness during the trip requires you to be transported to medical care or to return home.
Voltage
The standard voltage in Mongolia is 220 volts/50Hz. Sockets require a European type of plug or adapter.
Shopping
There are many duty free shops where convertible currencies are acceptable. Wide range of goods may be bought for foreign currency at favorable prices-typical Mongolia souvenirs, wines, furs, garments in cashmere, camel wool blankets, national costumes, boots, jewelry, carpets, books, records, horns, etc. In all other local shops local currency must be used.
